MGI 2022: live-streamed preliminary interviews revolutionize beauty pageants

Every time a beauty pageant major favorite fails to place among the semi-finalists or finalists, fans and the regular audience are left wondering: what happened? At times it can be explained by a weak preliminary interview. But how do you know it if in 70 years of Grand Slam pageants, people, in general, have never had access to such interviews? Well, that changed yesterday, when Miss Grand International decided to live-stream the contestants’ interviews with the judges. For the first time, those doors were opened to everyone. Seeing them speaking under pressure in front of key people in deciding the competition, has changed the perspectives of many who follow the competition closely.

The first candidates to be interviewed already raised the bar, with Mauritius, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines, doing quite well. Miss Philippines in particular, has positioned herself as a strong candidate for the title after her fierce interview. In addition to being very articulate, she is a strong defender of human rights and the environment. The beauty of the Australian delegate is outstanding, and so is the aura of the British contender. Both are also great speakers.

Some curiosities: Miss Germany is part Thai. Miss Mauritius, on the other hand, was prepared for the pageant in Thailand. Miss Spain was born in Cuba and moved to Spain when she was 10 years old with her mother. The Spaniard candidate is very charismatic and did a very good interview. The judges, who seemed to be very relaxed and friendly, even played around with some of the candidates, when, for example, they said that Misses Belgium and Italy were dressed like stewardesses.

Miss Sri Lanka, a basketball athlete, oozed charisma! Miss Denmark was a pleasant surprise, especially being one of the youngest candidates around, at just 18 years old. Nepal was doing great until she refused to answer the question that was asked of all: who would you vote for if you were a judge instead of a candidate? 

Another candidate who stood out with her interview was Miss Guatemala. This adventure-lover delivered a lot of personality and self-confidence when talking to the judges. Also excellent, with clear positions and eloquence, was the representative of the Dominican Republic. Angola impressed everyone by saying that she learned her good English by herself, with the help of friends, music and movies. Bolivia also did well and, during her interview, we learned something new: Mr. Nawat will start sending Thai candidates to Reina Hispanoamericana, the main international beauty pageant held in South America!

How great were Miss Netherlands' charisma and radiant smile? This “Dutch delight” earned some important points on Monday afternoon, as well as the hearts of many fans. Miss France, the daughter of a Korean woman who was adopted by a French family, and a French father, conveyed a lot of courage and inspiration by sharing the fact that she is autistic. She was another positive surprise in the interview round. Miss Vietnam, beautifully dressed in yellow, spoke about the pressure she feels because the current MGI is from her country.

Ghana was very cute, continuing to charm everyone with her beauty, unique style, and now also, sparkle when speaking. Turkiye got off to a great interview by talking about her amazing work with refugees in Germany, where she lives. However, when exposing the physical sacrifices she has been undergoing to reach what she imagines are the body standards required by the MGI, shocked those watching it. Teresa and Lees made clear to her the importance of a young woman's good health over any other aspect. It was perhaps the most critical moment of the interviews.

Candidates such as Mozambique and Italy, despite their limited command of English, were able to make themselves understood. Costa Rica, a little nervous, did not fail to convey her message. The Colombian representative spoke very well and said that she has double nationality and has already competed for the title of Miss Texas USA. Argentina currently resides in Dubai, and was Miss Universe Kosovo, in 2016. Her facial beauty was complimented by the judges. Miss Ukraine spoke about how the people of her country are united and connected in order to face this inhuman war taking place in her country.

Miss Cuba was another excellent surprise with her great personality and life story. She was 1st runner-up in Nuestra Belleza Latina in the past. Curaçao, once again, was THE BOMB! She delivered one of the best interviews, physically resembling Miss World 1975 when she won, Wilnelia Merced. She was one of the best, no doubt! Nerves betrayed Miss Paraguay to some extent, however, she is a candidate who grows up on stage and will recover in the preliminary event, on the 23rd!

Miss Uganda's poise, oratory, and inner light were impressive! Ecuador could pass for Polynesian, Asian, or the beautiful Latina that it is. She spoke very well, growing in the competition. We loved Miss Ireland´s clever pun: “Stop the War and Violence with “Peace”. Peace is her name! Jamaica was elegant and eloquent, El Salvador has a smile that brights up the room, speaks extremely well, and is very genuine. Japan is half Filipino and has the sweetness and friendliness characteristic of the Japanese women who compete in MGI.

Mexico had her best moment in the competition so far, looking confident and mastering the English language. Miss Thailand, one of the favorites, was absolutely adorable, winning everyone over with her wide smile and a few words of well-spoken English. Myanmar is very funny and looked more beautiful than ever! She made the judges laugh. Pakistan has beautiful eyes and speaks well. Portugal was another standout when it comes to speaking skills, just like the very confident Miss Malaysia. Panama is very poised and speaks quite well.

Misses Singapore and India, as is to be expected, earned some important points for their excellent speaking skills! The very charming Miss Laos, another popular choice among the candidates, speaks English very well and delivers good content. Miss Brazil was challenged with a political question and managed to answer it with class and diplomacy. She remained calm and elegant at all times, dressed like a 1960s Hollywood star! Canada is elegant and speaks well, while Poland is expressive, intelligent, and has a stunning face. Honduras, as usual, shined with her bright personality!

Puerto Rico was absolutely cool and collected during her interview, speaking with clarity and depth and demonstrating why she is in the fight for this crown. An adopted child born in Russia, her life story is also very inspiring. Miss Venezuela, in addition to being very beautiful, is charismatic and is a very good speaker. Miss United States took a chance on speaking some Thai and pleased the judges with her intelligence, oratory, and confidence. Miss Nigeria, another very popular candidate among the delegates, was regal and assertive in her interview. The most voted among the candidates though, was the hometown queen, Miss Indonesia, who also did an excellent interview, showing her charisma and poise effortlessly. Miss Peru did a good job as well, sharing a bit of her life story and will to inspire other women with her own experiences. Miss Cambodia connected very well with the judges with her charisma. She is strong.

However, the one candidate who completely nailed her interview and deserved a perfect 10, was Miss Czech Republic! She was sincere when talking about a difficult childhood when she faced trauma and fear of death and the transition to the positive and happy person she is today. Her interview was powerful, real, and delivered with fluidity. Simply sensational!
